The PhD in Music with Specialization in Musicology aims to hone scholars out of practicing musicians as well as researchers of other disciplines. This philosophical program grounds its interdisciplinary scholarship in sociology, anthropology, ideology, and aesthetics. It aims to interject these differing disciplines in cultivating the critical-mindedness of students in their scholarly writing. Sonic emphasis on the popular––the grassroots, fills the gap of the stereotyped aesthetics where fine music is aristocratic and the popular belongs to the masses.
