CEU Conservatory of Music Faculty Wins First Prize in Chorus Austin’s 11th Annual Composer’s Competition

Centro Escolar University’s Conservatory of Music professor and alumnus, Ian Gabriel Corpuz earned the first prize in the Young Composers Division of Chorus Austin’s prestigious 11th Annual Composer’s Competition with his original composition titled Laudate Dominum.

This year, Chorus Austin’s competition attracted a total of 30 submissions, spotlighting talented composers from across the globe, and Corpuz' work emerged the best among the entries.

A seasoned composer and educator, Mr. Corpuz' influence extends beyond CEU. He is also affiliated with the Philippine Women’s University School of Music and the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Music Production program, where he continues to inspire and mentor aspiring musicians. Mr. Corpuz’ work has not only resonated locally but has also garnered international recognition, with Laudate Dominum published by Muziksea, a Singapore-based company dedicated to showcasing Southeast Asian composers. Recently, he also won 1st place for his composition “Bugtong-Bugtong” in the 3rd annual composition contest by The Palouse Choral Society (PCS) in Moscow, Russia. 

Mr. Corpuz’ success adds to the accolades of CEU's Conservatory of Music, reflecting its commitment to fostering world-class musicians who impact the global arts community.

CEU Salutes Outstanding Employees at Quality Awards 2024

Centro Escolar University celebrated excellence, dedication, and innovation during the CEU Quality Awards 2024, an event recognizing the outstanding achievements of its faculty and non-teaching staff.

Among the top honorees was Dr. Ethel May Oñas, who was named Teacher of the Year for her exceptional dedication to academic excellence and her role in inspiring students to excel. Recognized for their exemplary service, Mr. Frances Trinidad and Ms. Ma. Shalymar Javier were awarded Non-Teaching Employee of the Year in the Supervisory and Non-Supervisory categories, respectively.

The School of Nursing earned the Research of the Year award for their two studies, “Key Lifestyles and Health Outcomes Across 16 Prevalent Chronic Diseases: A Network Analysis of an International Observational Study” and “Key Lifestyles and Interim Health Outcomes for Effective Interventions in General Populations: A Network Analysis of a Large International Observational Study”. 

The research team, comprising Dr. Elvira Urgel, Dr. Josephine De Leon, Mrs. Anjanette De Leon, and Dr. Ceryl Sagun, was commended for advancing healthcare research.

Innovation took center stage with the CEU STARS Award, which recognized Ms. Laimahar Mauyag and Ms. Joy Castillo for their suggestion, the Automated Office Supplies Request and Inventory Management System, streamlining resource management. 

The Tech Smart Force, consisting of Mr. Reymart Bolasoc, Mr. Efren Santos, Ms. Alyssa Joseph, Mr. Gerard Hugo Jr., Ms. Marjorie Portuguez, and Mrs. Lyka Anne Sagun, was named Best Quality Circle for their collaborative efforts in improving technological operations. Additionally, Team B, comprising Ms. Wira Clarin, Mr. Brian Wendell San Jose, and Ms. Melody Guino, received the Best Internal Quality Audit Sub-Team award for upholding internal quality assurance standards.

The 7S Model Awards celebrated workplace practices across campuses. For Manila, the Office of the President and Chief Academic Officer, the School of Pharmacy, and the Health Services Department won in the Small, Medium, and Large categories, respectively, with the School of Pharmacy also recognized under the Student Council category. At the Malolos campus, the Cash/Accounting/Property Section and the Office of the Vice President for CEU Malolos took home awards in the Small and Large categories, respectively. The Makati campus awards were presented to the Dentistry Department for the Small category and the Office of the University Registrar for the Large category.

Two individuals were celebrated for their exemplary attendance and punctuality: Mr. Rene delos Santos (PPFD Manila) and Mr. Jelito Martinez (PPFD Makati). 

Adding prestige to the occasion was the presentation of the Sampaguita Award to Dr. Rhoda Aguilar, University Registrar, marking her as the 6th recipient of this esteemed honor. Conferred by CEU President and Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Ma. Cristina Padolina, the Sampaguita Award acknowledges Dr. Aguilar's exceptional contributions to the University and her unwavering commitment to excellence, symbolizing the values and spirit of CEU.

Dr. Rey Fremista, Founder and Chief Consultant of MindGrit, graced the event as the guest speaker with valuable insights on quality in professional settings, inspiring the CEU community to embrace continuous improvement and innovation.

The CEU Quality Awards 2024 underscored the University's commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and dedication. 

Spearheading the celebration were Dr. Maria Rita D. Lucas as overall chair, Dr. MariaDonnabelle U. Dean as co-chair, and Dr. Maria Corazon L. Andoy as member, with guidance from Dr. Erna V. Yabut, Vice President for Research and Evaluation, Dr. Ma. Flordeliza L. Anastacio, Vice President for CEU Malolos, and Dr. Pearly P. Lim, Vice President for CEU Makati as consultants. Together with the dedicated search and working committees, the University continues to strive to recognize individuals who exemplify quality, agility, and resilience within the CEU community.
