Centro Escolar University School of Medical Technology sophomore students presented their study titled “On the Separation of the Church and State: Is the Church's Opposition on the Anti-Terrorism Law in the Philippines a Case on Point” in the recent Lukad Conference 2020 which was hosted by the Philippine Normal University South Luzon.
The study is about to what extent should the separation of church and state be. Specifically, it focused on determining if the church went overboard in criticizing the fast-tracked passing of the Anti-Terror Law as stated in the pastoral letter released by Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
“The team grew interested in the topic on the separation of the church and the state due to the allegations that the Catholic Church is becoming political because of its criticisms on the passing of the Anti-Terror Law. It prompted us more when I myself came across the pastoral letter on one of the live masses in Quiapo Church,” said Maria Angeline Santos who represented the group for the actual presentation of their pre-recorded video. Other members of the team are Carlos Angelo Panuelo, Renee Angelie Parale, Angela Pasicolan, and Patricia Salazar.
According to Angeline, although the rest of the presenters were already professionals and are taking their master’s degrees, which made her quite intimidated, she managed to excellently answer all the questions, and even received positive feedbacks for their paper.
The group was extremely delighted that their study was successfully accepted for oral presentation in the Lukad Conference 2020 although it was initially just a requirement for their subject, Man, Church and Society under Mr. Ruel Nalam, their professor, who earnestly supported the submission of their paper in the said virtual conference.
