Centro Escolar University School of Science and Technology students’ thesis proposal titled “Antibacterial Activity of Selected Mangrove Plants Leaf Extracts against Shrimp Pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus,” is one of the recipients of the 2023 Undergraduate Thesis Grant on Natural Products by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).

Maria Fatima Flores and Nathalee Kate Encinas, who are fourth year Bachelor of Science in Biology students, will receive funding for the completion of their thesis project. Their commitment to scientific excellence and genuine concern for the beneficial use of natural products have made them earn this significant opportunity.

Their research project holds great promise in the field of microbiology and aquaculture. The project would attempt to find a scientific treatment derived from natural products to manage bacterial infection caused by V. parahaemolyticus in shrimps.

Likewise, it aims to seek an alternative solution to the use of synthetic antimicrobial agents against the pathogens. Moreover, with the completion of the project, it may also raise awareness of the country’s current status on bacterial infections in shrimp aquaculture and the potential of mangrove plants as natural bactericidal against shrimp bacterial pathogens.

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Teresa R. Perez, and Former Assistant Dean of the CEU Graduate School, Dr. Maricar Ching, as their thesis advisers, have played pivotal role in guiding and mentoring Maria Fatima Flores and Nathalee Kate Encinas.
