With the theme “Eye Am Vaccinated: Immunify One’s Health and Vision”, CEU School of Optometry celebrated the Sight Saving Month through a virtual program packed with relevant discussions and activities for the students via Facebook.
Since the 1980’s, the Sight Saving Month has been an annual celebration of the School of Optometry. This year, the importance of vaccination in this crucial time of the pandemic was emphasized by one of the keynote speakers, Dr. Maria Elizabeth Valconcha who is CEU’s very own alumna and now the President of the Integrated Philippine Association of Optometrists.
Further discussion related to the event’s theme was done by Dr. Catherine Joanne Valconcha-Andraneda, Pediatric Opthalmology and Strabismus Specialist. She tackled the ocular transmission of the COVID-19 and the management of conjunctivitis, which can be a symptom of the said virus.
She listed safety tips to follow aside from the standard protocol of observing physical distancing, washing of hands, and wearing of face masks and face shields. These are reducing direct touching of eyes and face, refraining from wearing contact lenses during the outbreak, refraining from applying cosmetics, and changing sheets, pillowcases and towels regularly.
After the very informative talk, questions were entertained and answered by the speaker through an open forum. Winners of the Eye Draw and Eye-fomercial competitions were also announced.
This event is a joint effort of the Optometry Clinicians Club, COMPASS Optometry Chapter and Optometrist Student Council, with the guidance of the CEU School of Optometry Dean, Dr. Elena Borromeo.
