CEU Communication and Media Student’s Documentary Finalist in 43rd CMMA Best TV Production

Centro Escolar University Communication and Media student Kyla Dela Peña’s documentary entry made it as finalist in the 43rd Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) Best TV Production category.

The 13-minute documentary titled “Dalawampu’t Walong Baitang” was created, directed and produced by Kyla herself with the assistance of Alvin Dela Cruz from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. The production of this masterpiece took them 15 days.

“It tells a story about the Candelaria siblings that are about to undergo the new learning system, blended learning which happens to be very difficult for them. But despite the challenges brought by the pandemic in terms of education, and the long-time hardship they experience over the water system, the Candelaria siblings are among the many students that did not stop into stepping to another grade level and another academic year. And like the 28 steps to the staircase to reach the uphill they did not let anything stop them from rising”, shared Kyla who is currently in her second year in college.

According to Kyla, together with her co-director, she decided to feature the Candelaria siblings, Renz, Honeyleth and Trisha Joy because they have a lot of stories to tell.

“The Candelaria siblings represent a lot of students who chose to continue their education despite the huge adjustment as they are looking forward to achieving their dream of becoming professionals someday. These kids continue to tell us to be hopeful every day and look forward to what’s ahead”, added Kyla.

For Kyla, the winning element of their documentary is its rawness and message. It shows how mundane and true the everyday life of the Candelaria siblings can be. Their innocence in general was captured vividly and their message of hope was conveyed intensely.

The documentary film was initially just a course requirement in Journalism Principles and Practices under his professor, Mr. Ricky Rosales, the Head of the CEU Communication and Media. Seeing the potential of the film, he encouraged Kyla to submit it as entry to the 43rd CMMA.

The Archdiocese of Manila has yet to announce the CMMA awarding ceremony.
